Illuminating how tumor cells can ‘hijack’ normal cells to initiate metastasis. These projects are focused on understanding the mechanisms of metastasis. How can we prevent cancer cells from disseminating throughout the body, and what tools can we engineer to study this phenomenon?

The future of cancer medicine requires a rational approach to drug design. Our recent efforts have focused on using novel engineering strategies including supramolecular nanochemistry in order to translate drugs for enhanced clinical utility. By reducing toxicity and increasing delivery of drug to the tumor, we can overcome many of the side effects of treatment and improve therapy outcomes.

The Laboratory for Translational Medicine has developed a unique platform to visualize when cancer cells stop working. Using an approach that combines nanochemistry and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) we have designed a new generation of drugs that ‘light up’ when they kill tumor cells.

Development of resistance to anticancer therapy is the underlying driver of relapse and mortality. Dr. Goldman’s Drug Resistance Group has developed a multi-disciplinary approach that integrates mathematics, biology, and bioengineering to study and overcome the mechanisms of resistance.
